VFR, MVFR, IFR, LIFR: flight categories explained

Flight categories are quick labels that combine cloud ceiling and visibility into one read on how clear the sky is: VFR, MVFR, IFR, or LIFR. VFR means a ceiling above 3,000 ft and visibility over 5 miles; LIFR means a ceiling below 500 ft or visibility under 1 mile.

What flight categories are

A flight category turns two numbers, the cloud ceiling and the visibility, into one label. VFR stands for visual flight rules, the clear-weather end of the scale. MVFR is marginal VFR. IFR stands for instrument flight rules, and LIFR is low IFR, near zero visibility.

The ceiling is the height of the lowest broken or overcast cloud layer. Few or scattered clouds never count as a ceiling, however low they are.

The flight category scale

CategoryCeilingVisibilityWhat it means
VFRAbove 3,000 ftOver 5 milesA clear, open sky.
MVFR1,000 to 3,000 ft3 to 5 milesLower clouds or some haze.
IFR500 to under 1,000 ft1 to under 3 milesLow cloud, fog, rain, or haze.
LIFRBelow 500 ftUnder 1 mileThick fog, low cloud, or heavy precipitation.

Why the category changes

Low clouds and reduced visibility from fog, rain, snow, or haze push the category from VFR toward LIFR. It usually tracks the same weather driving the forecast icon: a foggy morning reads IFR or LIFR, then lifts to MVFR and VFR as the fog burns off.

Fog is the classic cause. When the temperature and dew point are within about 4°F (2°C) of each other, fog or low clouds are likely to form.

What flight categories mean for you

Everyday

VFR means a clear, open sky outside; LIFR means thick fog, low cloud, or heavy precipitation. LIFR and IFR days usually mean fog or heavy rain, which also means reduced visibility for traffic to see you if you are out walking or running, so it is worth extra caution or reflective gear.

Outdoors

MVFR or worse often means low clouds hiding summits and viewpoints, so it is a good day for a lower, forested route instead of a scenic peak. IFR or LIFR on a morning commute usually means fog, so allow extra time.

Flying

For drones, IFR or LIFR usually means you cannot meet Part 107's 3-mile visibility and 500 ft cloud clearance. Part 107 also requires staying at least 2,000 ft horizontally from clouds. Pilots look for the lowest broken or overcast layer, which sets the ceiling.

Common questions

What is MVFR?

MVFR means marginal visual flight rules: a ceiling of 1,000 to 3,000 ft or visibility of 3 to 5 miles.

Can a clear sky be IFR?

Yes. The category is set by whichever is worse, ceiling or visibility, so a cloudless sky with 2 miles of haze is still rated IFR.

Can I fly a drone in IFR conditions?

Usually not. IFR or LIFR typically means you cannot meet Part 107's 3-mile visibility minimum and 500 ft cloud clearance.
